In 1950 the town took its name from the Libertador General San Martin. It currently shows a series of important tourist centres and others just developing, all of which play different roles according to the services and attractions they deliver. The International Date Line is an imaginary line on the earth's surface, at approximately the 180th meridian (LONGITUDE). Traveling east across the line, takes the traveler back one day; traveling west, takes the traveler forward one day. Without the International Date Line travelers going westward would discover that when they returned home, one day more than they thought had passed, even though they had kept careful tally of the days. This first happened to Magellan's crew after the first circumnavigation of the globe!

Kommandorskie Island
The Komandorski Islands or Commander Islands are a group of treeless islands east of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East, in the Bering Sea. The islands consist of Bering Island, Medny Island, and two small islets. Geologically, although separated from the rest of the chain by several hundred miles, the Commander Islands are the westernmost extension of the Aleutian Islands. The inhabitants, Russians and Aleuts, fish and hunt whales and other marine mammals. The largest village is Nikolskoye on Bering Island.

The city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is the industrial, scientific and cultural center of Kamchatka. The city and its extremely large harbor are well-protected from all storms, and even from the dreaded tsunami tidal waves. The largest tsunami, the tidal wave of 1952, destroyed the town of Severo-Kurilsk on the island of Paramushir. Although the town is only 100 miles from Kamchatka, as the tsunami ran into Avacha Bay it died down to a harmless wave only a few feet tall. Even its long-time residents make no claims about the city's beauty; its monotonous, Soviet-style 5-story buildings (there are no tall buildings in the city because of earthquake risks) are hard on the eyes, and pot-hole filled streets crowded with old, coughing cars do not add much. This matters little, however, since the city is surrounded by incredible natural beauty- the Avacha and Koryak volcanoes to the north, and huge Avacha Bay to the south.

Pitcairn Island
This tiny island has a most colorful history. In 1789, Captain Bligh of the Bounty was forced adrift when Fletcher Christian and 25 crew members mutinied. These fugitives then settled on the bewitching island of Pitcairn. Over 200 years later, their descendants still thrive in the Pacific paradise.

Reunion Island
Situated in the Indian Ocean, the island is a part of the archipelago of Mascareignes. Reunion is a small volcanic island, the various new-comers came on reunion island and brought their French, Indian customs, Malagasy, the quibble, mahoraises, and folklore. The maloya was, originally , the dance of the slaves. The Creole kitchen, on base of spices, is a mixture of Indian receipts, Malagasy and metropolitan.

Robinson Crusoe Island
This Island belongs to Juan Fernandez Archipelago, which has been a passing place for explorers and sailors, hiding place for pirates and their treasures, shelter for Alexander Selkirk, the sailor who inspired Robinson Crusoe novel, and prison during the Chilean Independence War. It is actually a National Park and Unesco World Biosphere Reserve. Robinson Crusoe Island, separated from Valparaiso by 670 km of the open Pacific ocean, is not a major holiday destination. The archipelago consists of three islands with extraordinary rugged and mountainous topography, and distinctly Mediterranean climate. Rainfall varies greatly over very short distances, allowing dense rainforest with many endemic species, in contrast with other Atacama-like areas.

Taiohae is a pleasant village bordering the sea. It is the administrative, economic, educational and health center of the Marquesas Islands. Here are the French and Territorial administrators, the government buildings, gendarmerie, post office, general hospital, town hall, Air Tahiti office, banks, schools, well-stocked stores and shops. It lies on the south coast at the head of the Bay of Taiohae whose entrance is guarded by two rocks called "Les Sentinelles."

Vava'u
Vava'u is a raised coral island, as is Tongatapu and consists of one large island and as many as 40 smaller islands. Tradition says that the mythical hero Maui who fished both islands from the sea, put a little more effort into Vava'u which is a big island rising 204 metres above sea level with a stunningly beautiful dramatic coastline.
